2013 was the year that George Saunders went from being a cult author to being widely recognized as one of the very best and most important fiction writers in the world.
His story collection Tenth of December was a finalist for the National Book Award and inspired a reverent cover story in the New York Times Magazine.
In January, Tenth of December comes out in paperback, and Saunders is coming to Atlanta's Highland Inn Ballroom Lounge, 644 N. Highland Avenue to launch the publication.
His appearance, Tuesday, January 7 at 7 p.m. is sponsored by A Cappella Books. Tickets, which include a signed copy of the new paperback, are $20 and are available at A Cappella Books in Inman Park (208 Haralson Ave NE at the corner of Dekalb Ave.) and online.
Through three previous collections, Saunders was recognized as one of the most important and original writers of his generation; Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet.
Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human.
Unsettling, insightful, and hilarious, the stories in Tenth of December-through their manic energy, their focus on what is redeemable in human beings, and their generosity of spirit-not only entertain and delight; they fulfill Chekhov's dictum that art should "prepare us for tenderness."
