In 1963, James Baldwin predicted in The Fire Next Time that if white America did not right its racial wrongs, it would only be a matter of time before "the fire" once again raged. Now, the rapid gentrification of our inner cities, growing wealth inequality, and the growing numbers of black and brown bodies killed on the streets demonstrate that the hour has come. National Book Award–winner Jesmyn Ward takes Baldwin's warning as an impetus for The Fire This Time: A New Generation Speaks about Race, a groundbreaking collection of essays and poems about race from the most important voices of her generation and our time. In it, Ward and her contributors argue that in the fifty-odd years since Baldwin’s essay was published, entire generations have dared everything and made significant progress--but the idea that we are living in a “post-racial” society is an inaccurate and harmful reflection of a truth the country must confront.

On Wednesday, August 3, at 7PM, Jesmyn Ward is joined by contributors Carol Anderson, Jericho Brown, and Kevin Young to read from, discuss, and sign copies of The Fire This Time at The Carter Center.

A Cappella Books will have copies of The Fire This Time--as well as other books by Ward and the contributors--available for purchase and signing following the program. This event is free and open to the public.
