Bullivant and the Lambs

Alfred A. Knopf, 1948. First American. Cloth. Used - Very Good / Good. Item #232757
ISBN: B004V7HVFK

In clipped, edgeworn dustjacket, heavily darkened at margins & spine. There are orange/red stains on the back jacket panel splashed through the blurbs for 'Some Borzoi Fiction' promotion. Turquoise cloth boards with brown stamped lettering & floral decoration. Topstain is faded grey, but I cannot surmise what color it was when new. Clean, unmarked text. Ivy Compton-Burnett is at her--comparable to no one--finest. The opening lines of never ending unnaturalistic dialog are strange for strangeness sake: 'Is that fire smoking?' said Horace Lamb.'Yes, it appears to be, my dear boy.' 'I am not asking what it appears to be doing. I asked if it was smoking.' 'Appearances are not heldto be a clueto the truth,' said his cousin. 'But we seem to have no other.' Bullivant and The Lambs is the U.S. title for the Manservant and Maidservant (1947, Victor Gollancz)
