Cixous' masterwork is arguably the greatest work of Joyce criticism. And there are many many others to compare it with. One of Joyce's most famous quotes must be: 'I've put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant, and that's the only way of insuring one's immortality.' I think he said that regarding Ulysses, but it might as easily have been said about Finnegans Wake. Nora Barnacle remembered Joyce alone in his study working on the later book (which took 17 years) laughing to himself regarding his own jokes and puns. The Exile of James Joyce is part literary study, part biography, part philosophical text and much more. (765 pages)
