An Unsuitable Attachment

ISBN: 0333326547

Five' x Eight'; First/first (U.K.) In dustjacket. Not price clipped. Original British price on front flap, lower corner. Hunter green cloth. Boards mildly worn at edges. Gold lettering on spine. Slight lean of spine. Faint foxing top edge. Two small tan stains bottom edge. Sound binding. Clean, unmarked interiors. (256 pp.) Written in 1963, and rejected by her publisher. Readers at Cape considered Ms Pym (1913 -- 1980) out of touch with the current of the 1960s, and thankfully they were probably correct. Who cares. Dishearten by being rejected by her long time publisher and then several more, Pym grew to dislike the book. But she was incapable of writing a bad book, as far as I can discern. She wrote in perfect prose of gentle characters, no thrills, spills or melodrama. To my mind, An Unsuitable Attachments ranks among her best or truth told among the best of any writers of the 20th century. She was 'rediscovered' and became once again fashionable in 1977, the year of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, etc.! Sadly Barbara Pym died in 1980, and this book was finally published posthumously in 1982.
