Brown leather with rather faded gold lettering and decor on spine. Spine is sun bleached with considerable wear at top and bottom, where it is visibly flaked and bruised. Front and rear board corners brumped and worn. Front end pages tanned, curled and damp stained. Rear pastedown has what appears to be some sort of pocket affixed, though it is empty. Opposite page, the rear free end page is darkened from many decades of contact with this 'pocket' cardstock. Text is clean. (472 pages). This is revised edition of novel Simms first published in 1841 under the title of The Kinsman. The author was a popular novelist during the 19th century. He was an advocate for slavery. During the Civil War he wrote for a Secessionists newsletter, and wrote little of literary value, publishing only one novel, Paddy McGann (1863). In the wanning days of the war, stragglers from Sherman's Army burnt Simms' plantation home and his collection of 10,000 books.
