First U.S. Edition in edgeworn dustjacket chipped, especially at top & bottom of spine. Also two rough hewn tears. One two-inch tear at top of front panel next to the spine head. A second one-inch tear bottom of rear panel before base of spine. Rubbing with stains and darkening of verso. Black cloth covered boards with gold lettering on spine, with some fading from 73 years of existence in the environment of planet Earth. Bright clean red end pages. Mildly worn raspberry red top stain. Frontispiece is portrait of Maugham by Sir Gerld Kelly. [367 pages]
