Uncommon title. {7.5'' x 5.25''} Well worn cloth covered boards with Joseph Pierre Nuyttens illustration in orange & black inks. Board edges heavily worn. Covered has blotches of discoloration and stains. Gutter before title page is cracked and just hanging by threads. This early clutch of pages is also split about one & one-half inch from bottom. Spine is darkened and leans a bit. Textblock edges dust stained & darkened top edge and fore-edge. Bottom edge is damp stained. Rear end papers has splatter of soiling & small spots. This is the 2nd (and, I think, last) in Baum's series of detective fiction for young readers, what we would call YA literature these days. Four pages (including the frontispiece) of black & white illustrations printed one sided on plates [298 pages plus 18 pages of the publisher's ads]
