At the October edition of Writers at the Wrecking Bar, A Cappella Books is delighted to welcome author and professor of music at Agnes Scott College, Tracey E. W. Laird, to celebrate the release of her new book, "Dolly Parton: 100 Remarkable Moments in an Extraordinary Life." Laird will appear in conversation with award-winning writer and podcast producer Kate Sweeney.

Musician Becky Shaw will lead off this Writers at the Wrecking Bar event by playing a live set of Parton songs at 7 PM.

About the Author

Tracey E. W. Laird is a professor of music at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. She is the author or editor of four books, including "Austin City Limits: A History" (Oxford University Press, 2014) and "Austin City Limits: A Monument to Music" (Insight Editions, released in September 2015), the latter co-authored with her spouse, who is also a writer. She has contributed a chapter on "Country Music and Television" to the collection "The Oxford Handbook of Country Music" (Oxford University Press, 2017). Her perspective on the twenty-first century is part of the 50th Anniversary edition of Bill Malone's seminal "Country Music, U.S.A." (University of Texas Press).

About the Conversation Partner

Kate Sweeney is a writer and podcast producer living in Atlanta. Her book "American Afterlife" (University of Georgia Press) won a Georgia Author of the Year Award in 2015. Her writing has appeared in Full Grown People, Oxford American, Atlanta magazine, Utne Reader, New South, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, among other places.

Kate produced the first season of the podcast "Buried Truths" for 90.1 WABE, which won Peabody and Robert F. Kennedy awards. She also hosted and produced four seasons of the What's Next ATL podcast. As an NPR affiliate journalist for more than a decade, Kate created radio stories that appeared on "Morning Edition," "All Things Considered," "Weekend Edition," "The Third Coast Audio Festival," and "The World." Her other projects have included "Tantrum," a podcast and live literary event for parents, and "True Story," which was one of Atlanta's first dedicated nonfiction reading series.

A Cappella Books presents Writers at the Wrecking Bar, a series of live author interview events showcasing some of the country's freshest voices in literary and contemporary fiction. Each program includes writers in conversation with an arbiter of Atlanta's book scene, giving the audience a chance to experience and participate in the Q&A and get a signed copy of the book. Held upstairs in the Marianna Room of the Wrecking Bar Brewpub, Writers at the Wrecking Bar hosts a cash bar, starting at 7 PM. The author conversation and book signing follow at 7:30 PM.
