Cora is a young slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia, where life is hell and the greater pain of womanhood awaits, creeping nearer every day. When she's convinced by a new arrival to take a terrifying risk and escape, The Underground Railroad, the new novel by prize-winning, bestselling author Colson Whitehead, comes into its full brilliance. In Whitehead’s ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor—engineers and conductors operate a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil. Like the protagonist of Gulliver’s Travels, Cora encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey, weaving a narrative that is at once a kinetic adventure tale of one woman’s ferocious will to survive and a shattering, powerful meditation on the history we all share.
On Wednesday, September 21st, at 7PM, Whitehead reads from, discusses, and signs copies of his book at the Carter Center. A Cappella Books will have copies of The Underground Railroad available for purchase and signing following the program.
This is a ticketed event. Tickets are $29 and include a signed, first edition of The Underground Railroad. Tickets for two are $39 and include a signed, first edition of The Underground Railroad.
